MANAGER: Welcome to the Responsible Vendor Alcohol Training Program!
When the Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco makes a case against a licensee, it doesn’t matter how long you’ve been on the program if you’re not paying attention to it. And it’s quite simple. From the onset of the program, participation is crucial!
New hires must complete the Responsible Vendor Alcohol New Hire Course in their first 30 days of work, or even before they begin to work, and if they don’t complete the course, they shouldn’t have a job. When they are taken off the schedule and the whole staff learns about it, attendance is suddenly taken very seriously.
All F&B front of the house should be included in the Responsible Vendor Alcohol New Hire Course for Staff & Managers. Even those who are not in positions of serving alcohol are certainly in positions to observe illegal acts. But how would they know which acts are illegal if they don’t complete the training? How would they know how to handle those illegal acts, or when to notify management, if they haven’t completed the training?
The same goes for Tri-Annual Updates…they cannot be skipped or delayed. The entire team is due at the same time regardless of their last course completion date. Every 4 months, management should choose which of the Tri-Annual Updates the team should enroll in and give them a mere 3 -5 days to get it done!
It’s the places that adhere to this policy who have the best attendance.
Managers: Remember that the Responsible Vendor Act requires that you complete the courses along with your team. In fact, Managers must complete both the Responsible Vendor Alcohol New Hire Course for Staff & Managers and the Responsible Vendor Alcohol New Hire Course – The Manager’s Section within 15 days of hire. Of course, Managers must also complete a Tri-Annual Update Course every 4 months along with the team! Be sure to reinforce what you learned in the course, every day on the job.
